Nicola Viebig

Director of Research

Dr. Nicola Viebig rejoined the European Vaccine Initiative (EVI) in January 2025 as Director of Research, after previously working with EVI from 2011 to 2021, most recently as Chief Scientific Officer. She has over 25 years of experience in infectious diseases and more than 15 years managing international, multidisciplinary projects spanning preclinical to late-stage clinical vaccine development for diseases of poverty and emerging infections. Her last role was at BioNTech SE, Germany, where she supported the infectious diseases portfolio as Director R&D Program Management.

After earning her PhD in host-parasite interactions at Heidelberg University, Germany, Nicola worked as a postdoc at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France, on a placental malaria vaccine candidate later advanced to early clinical development by EVI. Her experience includes coordinating a Graduate School of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Heidelberg University and serving as an Application Specialist at the Roche Applied Science EMEA Customer Support Center, providing multilingual scientific support.
She holds a Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification and has mentored numerous young researchers, including from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), while offering training in project management and vaccinology.
