Following the 3rd edition of the Annual Trials’ Day, the European Vaccine Initiative (EVI) co-organised a workshop on translational vaccinology with Multi-Stage Malaria Vaccine Consortium (MMVC) partners Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (MRCG) and the University of Sierra Leone (USL).

November 2025

A two-day translational vaccinology workshop (5-6 November 2025) was hosted by EVI and the MRCG. The event was attended by 20 participants from MRCG and 8 from the University of Sierra Leone (USL), as part of the MMVC project. The workshop aimed to build greater capacity in vaccine clinical trials and enhance networking through South-South and North-South collaboration and exchange visits.

EVI staff presented on numerous topics including the role of vaccines in public health, the current landscape of vaccine development, and partnering with other organisations and companies in the vaccine space (Dr. William Martin); the process of advancing candidates through preclinical studies, into manufacturing, and finally clinical trials (Dr. Jorge Almeida), and the interplay between immunology, vaccines, and pathogens (Dr. Irene Nkumama). The event also included lively discussion and practical exercises. Case studies from the malaria and Ebola fields were presented respectively by the MRC Unit Director Dr. Umberto D'Alessandro and Morrison Jusu of USL. Ethics and local regulatory requirements for vaccine trials in Gambia and Sierra Leone were presented by Dr. Gibbi Sey.

EVI looks forward to continuing collaborations with its global network of partners, as we drive forward the next generation of clinical trials and vaccine development initiatives.

We extend our sincere thanks to all faculty and participants for contributing their expertise and perspectives to the programme, and MRCG for jointly organising and making this a seamless and rewarding event.
